For me, writing and creation is a way to express one’s inner truths, passions, and ideas. After years of reading Eurocentric literature, I had never read literature written by someone like me, about someone like me. After I found Gloria Anzaldua’s “To Live In The Borderlands,” I finally saw myself in what I was reading. I am Puerto-Rican and Black and that experience has shaped my life a lot. I chose to express my love and understanding of this poem through a video. This video will give you a glimpse into my life, into the experience of not belonging.

Process

After being inspired to create a video documenting and expressing my love for Gloria Anzaldua’s “To Live In The Borderlands,” I tried to figure out how I could make my idea come to fruition. I mainly used iMovie to format and create this piece. I furthered my understanding of iMovie’s audio tools and its photo editing capabilities. The length of the video was very difficult to cut down on, but, in the end, we figured it out. After the video was completed, I was so proud of my work and of how authentic the video was to my experiences.
