Hi, my name is Maxx Carr and I’m a former mentee of Girls Write Now. I’m currently attending Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, majoring in Creative Writing and minoring in Music History & Philosophy.
My years at Girls Write Now were some of the best parts of my high school experience. Each week meeting with my mentor and the monthly workshops were such a fun, engaging, and wonderful time. I learned so many different things from other mentees, from my mentor, and with my mentor about life in general from being part of the program. I learned new ways to explore my writing through different digital mediums I never knew that I could. I learned that there are other people who are just like me who felt lost in the world and were able to find themselves in their writing. I learned that even though no one really has all the answers, that’s okay because we can all learn together.
I really appreciate that I had my mentor there with me. We’re still in contact now and I really appreciate that we are because the bond that we formed was really important to me. I’m really grateful to still have Girls Write Now in my life and to have had it as part of my life during high school because it really was a support system that helped ground me in something that I needed.
With your support, we are nurturing girls on their paths to college and career, arming them with multi-genre, multimedia bodies of original work, bylines, awards, scholarships—and life-long relationships. Every single donation will directly support Girls Write Now’s initiatives to ensure that young women and gender nonconforming youth have access to free, innovative and invaluable programming.
