On Friday, June 11, we culminated our 2021 Spring Performance Series with an evening full of boundary-pushing stories about gender, mental health, growth and beyond! At this show, emceed by mentee Caroline Der and mentor Orla Murphy, we were so proud to honor Imbolo Mbue, author of How Beautiful We Were (Random House) as an Agent of Change.

Orla Murphy
Orla Murphy has served as speechwriter and adviser to two Presidents of the UN General Assembly and the Ambassador of Ireland to the United Nations. In this role she was also responsible for organising the High Level Meeting on Beijing+25 (on gender equality) and UN General Assembly Special Sessions. Prior to this Orla was Policy & Program Officer at UNAIDS US Liaison Office, Advocacy Officer at UNICEF Ireland, and International Humanitarian Law Advocacy Officer at the Irish Red Cross.Orla holds a BA in English & Politics, a Master’s in International Public Policy & Diplomacy, and a postgraduate law degree from University College Cork. She also holds a postgraduate diploma in public relations from the European Institute of Communications.Orla was a Global Health Corps Fellow and a UN Alliance of Civilisations Fellow. She also hosted and produced a weekly show on Cork Campus Radio, and contributed to her college newspaper, the UCC Express. Orla was shortlisted four times in the prestigious Martin Wills Memorial Writing Awards.A two-term mentor, Orla hails from Ireland.

Imbolo Mbue
Imbolo Mbue is the author of the New York Times bestseller Behold the Dreamers, which won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and was an Oprah’s Book Club selection. The novel has been translated into eleven languages, adapted into an opera and a stage play, and optioned for a miniseries. Her new novel, How Beautiful We Were is out now. A native of Limbe, Cameroon, and a graduate of Rutgers and Columbia Universities, Mbue lives in New York.
