Mentees and employees of leading tech company Kyndryl came together for an evening of poetry, tech talk & pizza
New York, NY – December 13, 2023
Girls Write Now teamed up with leading tech company Kyndryl for an event at our headquarters in midtown. Heaps of pizza, snacks, and Kyndryl swag lined the tables as attendees filed in and mingled with one another in the main room.
After introductions from Emily Rigby, Girls Write Now Community Manager, and Pam Hacker, Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility at Kyndryl, mentees Sheyla Javier, Ava Fung, and Waeza Jagirdar performed excerpts of original pieces of writing. From there, mentees and Kyndryl employees sat together to create centos, poems composed entirely of lines from different writers, based on words connected to technology and writing. Read an example below:
Courting the idea of what side you’re on
Your presence is ambiguous
By the nature of the outside world
Engaging with — or not— your nature
Rioting against the light on your face
The second half of the event served as a speed career chat, where mentees rotated through four stations and learned about roles within some of Kyndryl’s departments: Communications, Corporate Social Responsibility, Government Affairs, and Sustainability. Mentees had the opportunity to connect more closely with employees, and ask their burning questions about tech and prospective careers.
To close out the event, mentee Ari Benitez Linarez spoke about the impact Girls Write Now has had on her life before performing an excerpt of her poem, “Dear Poets.” Each attendee also went home with their very own copy of our 2023 anthology, On The Other Side of Everything.
Girls Write Now is grateful to Kyndryl for partnering with us for such an informative and unforgettable evening!
