Thank you to the fire inside of me that finally lit and allowed me to speak my truth.
Black Art & Writing: A Story Collection
I see myself I am mesmerized by my power. Emmanuella My name means God is with us I will not fail I see my cocoa-colored skin My delicate dark brown eyes The first to go to college in my family. The first published writer. I am taking my place in history Like women who have done it before me Like all the girls like me Whose skin is as dark and beautiful as night. –Mentee Emmanuella Agyemang
Rough Edges
This poem speaks to all the forgotten women: the women with stories, with histories. I aim to give a voice to women who should have a place in history and should be recognized because of their struggles and how vital they are to society.
Beautiful Skin
This piece is meant to call attention to racial problems that don’t exist only in the United States. Just because people’s experiences might be different doesn’t mean that they aren’t cut from the same cloth. People should take pride in who they are because everyone is beautiful, not different.
Reclaiming My Time
This essay is inspired by an essay prompt by an organization that I am in. With the help of my mom and Laura I was greatly inspired by all of the African American women that have made history.
exist(ing)
My piece was inspired by an article in ZORA, a publication by and for women of color, entitled “Black Women Are Driving a New R&B Resistance” by Mary Retta. Black women’s identities have been degraded for so long that in attempts to uplift us, we’re portrayed as deities instead of human.
The Illusion Of Inclusion
I believe that as a leader you can do two things: either dig people deeper into their illusions and create false hope or free them of their social standards and stereotypes to reach their fullest potential.
Dedicated to my Natural Hair
I wrote a letter to my natural hair because I recognized that I was dealing with some deeply engrained self-hate issues regarding it.
Still She Rises
Being a woman and Black poet myself who is proud of my heritage and background, I felt inclined to dedicate a piece to that part of me. I incorporated four published and groundbreaking poets in my piece to spotlight a few writers that inspired me to pursue poetry.
anxiety
At one time or another, we’ve all experienced loneliness and/or anxiety. Now more than ever, teenagers are constantly being mentally attacked and feel like there is no way out. I want to show that although times get rough and people leave, you will always be permanent in your own life and battles against anxiety, loneliness, and any other mental disease. The only way out is through. Fight for your happiness because you deserve it.
To The Ones With Skin As Dark And Beautiful As Night
“To The Ones With Skin As Dark And Beautiful As Night” comes from a time when I didn’t feel so confident. Lupita Nyong’o is a huge part of me realizing that I am beautiful as she took her place in history, and I soon took my own place in history.
The Angry Black Girl Podcast
The Angry Black Girl Podcast is a podcast made by a teenage girl with a lot of opinions and ideas on everything. She wants to get those ideas out there, find the facts, acknowledge different perspectives, and discuss them with her peers.
claiming my place
This project is a reflection on the internal journey I’ve been going through for the past few years.
For The Culture: The Black Hair Edition
This is a trailer for a podcast episode that will tackle the appropriation of Black hair in America. Kim Kardashian, a woman of major influence, appropriated Black hair when she wore box braids and called them “boxer braids.” I found it so offensive that I wanted to explore it and open up a conversation about it. I wanted to dismantle the cultural significance that was being ignored— and potentially lost. This podcast was my chance to be truthful about what matters to me: the intersection of hair and my identity.
