Welcome to An Overview of the Collaboratory & GWN Policies, the first Girls Write Now Collaboratory Toolkit course in the Orientation Journey! We’re so glad you’re here.
The GWN Collaboratory Toolkit courses are designed for program participants to be provided with the resources and tools needed to begin and maintain your pair relationship, participate in the Collaboratory, and be a well-connected member of the GWN Community.
This course is designed to give you an in-depth understanding of our Girls Write Now programming, policies, ways to get involved, and all that you have access to as a member of our community. Many of your questions about our program can be answered in the lessons of this course. We encourage you to actively engage with the material and to connect with us if you have any further questions!
Specific topics range from the GWN Portal, the Collaboratory, Community Engagement Events, Communications and our GWN Safety Policies!
Learning Objectives
- Learn the Types of Involvement at GWN: Expand your awareness of the ways in which you can be a part of our Girls Write Now community; what it means to take on the role of a Mentee, Mentor, or Member, and the access that you have to our services based on the role that you step into.
- Navigate Your GWN Portal: Familiarize yourself with using the GWN Portal for accessing courses, pair sessions, resources, and community events.
- Understand Collaboratory Programming & Components: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the GWN Collaboratory, its purpose and elements, and how to use its programming to benefit your goals for learning and development.
- Communicate & Engage Effectively: Be aware of the communication channels in use at GWN and learn best practices for reaching out and staying informed.
- Acknowledge & Adhere to GWN Safety Policies: Learn about Girls Write Now’s safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe and supportive environment for all members.
Requirements
Coursework
A list of asynchronous coursework can be found in the curriculum tab. As you progress through each lesson, make sure to press COMPLETE before moving on to the next.
Mentorship
You are in one of the following pair types. Your pair type is listed on your GWN Portal profile.
- Type 1: Mentor/Mentee: Meet 2-3 times per month and, as a pair, attend one of the engagement events listed below at least once per month.
- Type 2 : Peer-to-Peer: Meet 2 times per month and, as a pair, attend one of the engagement events listed below at least once per month.

Asynchronous Coursework
As part of the Orientation Journey, there are four asynchronous GWN Collaboratory Toolkit courses to introduce you to the GWN Collaboratory, provide you with mentoring tips and practices, develop your DEIB competencies, and promote mental health/wellness awareness. The courses are recommended to be taken in the following order:

- GWN Toolkit 3: DEIB: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging
- GWN Toolkit 4: Mental Health & Wellness
There is an optional fifth course that you will have access to, as part of the GWN Collaboratory Toolkit:
- GWN Toolkit: Building Foundations for English Language Learners
