Welcome to Mentoring Best Practices, the second Girls Write Now Collaboratory Toolkit course in the Orientation Journey! We’re so glad you’re here.
The GWN Collaboratory Toolkit courses are designed for program participants to be provided with the resources and tools needed to begin and maintain your pair relationship, participate in the Collaboratory, and be a well-connected member of the GWN Community.
This course is designed to equip mentors with the skills and knowledge to cultivate effective, genuine mentoring relationships. Through a blend of insights and practical applications, mentors will receive key techniques for setting goals, managing conflicts, and employing unique pedagogies — all to strengthen their ability support and guide their mentees in their personal and professional growth.
Specific topics range from relationship building, goal setting, conducting healthy conversation, and more.
Learning Objectives
- Develop Valuable Mentoring Practices: Discover successful practices, from setting goals and expectations to conducting healthy conversations, and identifying and overcoming barriers to effective communication.
- Enhance Conflict Competence: Recognize common causes of conflict in mentoring relationships and implement strategies for constructive resolutions.
- Utilize Effective Pedagogies: Explore teaching methods and learning styles to tailor mentoring approaches, and apply strategies that promote mentee engagement and growth.
- Foster Meaningful Connections: Learn to establish trust and rapport with mentees, and practical ways to maintain it throughout your time spent together.
Requirements
Coursework

Mentorship
You are in one of the following pair types. Your pair type is listed on your GWN Portal profile.
- Type 1: Mentor/Mentee: Meet 2-3 times per month and, as a pair, attend one of the engagement events listed below at least once per month.
- Type 2 : Peer-to-Peer: Meet 2 times per month and, as a pair, attend one of the engagement events listed below at least once per month.

As part of the Orientation Journey, there are four asynchronous GWN Collaboratory Toolkit courses to introduce you to the GWN Collaboratory, provide you with mentoring tips and practices, develop your DEIB competencies, and promote mental health/wellness awareness. The courses are recommended to be taken in the following order:
