Join us on Thursday, August 8, for our fourth open mic of the Summer Open Mic Series. Ten readers will be given three minutes to perform their work (poetry, a song, a story excerpt, etc.) in front of a live audience at the Girls Write Now office. We will do a generative writing exercise as a group to explore our own creativity before hearing from performers. There will be light snacks and refreshments!

Meet the Teaching Artist
Azia Armstead
Azia Armstead (she/her) is a poet from Richmond, Virginia. She holds an MFA in Poetry from New York University where she received the Goldwater Fellowship. In 2019, Azia was a finalist for the Furious Flower Poetry Prize judged by A. Van Jordan and honorable mention for the Arts Club of Washington’s Scholarship Award for Poetry. Azia was chosen as a finalist for the 2023 Nine Syllables Press Chapbook Contest. Her work has appeared in Boston Review, The Quarry, Obsidian, Rattle and elsewhere. She currently lives in Brooklyn.
Sasa Aakil
Sasa Aakil is a Multimedia Artist, Writer living and working in Rockville, Maryland. She is a potter, painter, poet, print maker, and bassist and served as the 2021 Montgomery County Youth Poet Laureate. Sasa has been featured in the Bethesda Magazine for her work as Youth Poet Laureate. She has also been featured in the Washington Post, as well as on WTOP for her work on the A Man Was Lynched Yesterday Project in 2020. She has shown sculptural and two-dimensional work at the American Poetry Museum and Black Rock Art Center. Sasa is the founder of If All the Trees Were Pens Open Mic and recently published her first chapbook, the culmination of all my despair and the music that saves me. She received a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Howard University in 2024. More information about Sasa’s visual and written work can be found on her website www.sasaaakil.com.
