virtual event; open to mentors across all programs
Calling all Girls Write Now Mentors! This is for you! Join us as our Professional Development series continues.
In this session, Ami Davis, founder of the Acadami, will discuss suggested practices to increase inclusion and equity specifically regarding LGBTQIA2S+ individuals via understanding relative language, concepts, common barriers, and sharing resources. We will explore LGBTQIA2S+ language and concepts such as biological/sex assigned at birth, gender identity, expression, and pronouns. We will consider introductory understandings of bias; how to identify bias within yourself; and how to avoid associated behaviors in the workplace. Ami will also suggest unique considerations for working with marginalized populations such as gender, sexual, racial, and ethnic minorities, while touching upon intersections of race, gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation.
Participants will have the opportunity to practice utilizing neutral pronouns, correcting missteps, addressing inaccuracies, and more.
Ami Davis (she/they) is a dynamic, engaging speaker who has a unique ability to connect with every audience. Ami does not shy away from the hard to have conversations and encourages vulnerability in learning through modeling. They combine education with personal story telling and humor to create a space of true transformation and inspiration. Ami honors the idea that true, sustainable change can only come from honest, open dialogue and she seeks to create this in every program, service, and session. She makes learning easy to digest, retainable, and even fun by applying energy, charisma, and trauma responsive practices. Mx. Davis lives in San Diego, California with their amazing partner and feisty yet very old pups. They enjoy hiking, rock climbing, adventuring on their motorcycle, attempting to surf (not very well), and writing by the ocean.
