The CHAPTERS Reading Series is where our girls go from page to stage, sharing their best original writing with the world. Each reading opens with a keynote speech from an inspiring writer who embodies the principles we instill in our girls.
The second installment of CHAPTERS 2016 features award-winning author Mia Alvar at the General Society Library on April 15. The event is open to the public (and free for teens!).
Mia, author of In the Country (Knopf, June 2015), a collection of short stories, is a Girls Write Now mentor alum and lives in New York City. We recently met up with Mia, chatting about her experience as a Girls Write Now mentor and her current role as a teacher for a graduate writing workshop at Columbia University.
Mia also commented on our girls work in the 2016 Girls Write Now Anthology:
“The courage, passion, and insight on display in (R)evolution: The Girls Write Now 2016 Anthology will knock you off your feet. Girls Write Now has created a powerful space for young women writers, and this book gives us a taste of the remarkable work they’ve done—and the great fun they’ve had—in the company of their peers and mentors. To read these pages is to feel hopeful and fired up about the future.”
A former Writer-in-Residence at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Mia has received support from the Corporation of Yaddo, the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, the Blue Mountain Center for the Arts and the Sarah Lawrence Seminar for Writers. Mia’s work has been cited for distinction in The Best American Short Stories and published in One Story, The Missouri Review, the Cincinnati Review, and elsewhere. Born in the Philippines and raised in Bahrain and the United States, she graduated from Harvard College and the School of the Arts at Columbia University.
This year’s CHAPTERS keynote speakers include new authors and fresh voices that are not always represented in the classic canon or on high school reading lists. We are thrilled to include alongside Mia Alvar, Tanwi Nandini Islam, Angela Flournoy, and Naomi Jackson.
