Girls Write Now is proud to be a long-standing partner with Agent of Change HBO/WarnerMedia, embracing our joint mission to amplify diverse voices and create a pipeline of talent into the entertainment industry. Recently, Girls Write Now aligned with HBO/WarnerMedia for an employee engagement workshop—an educational pop-up— that engaged and inspired girls and employees with meaningful and mindful activities, through Writing Works, our college and career readiness program. Our mentees were graciously invited into the halls of the new Hudson Yards headquarters where mentees met with employees (“mentors for the day”) and sat down to talk about professional networking, skills required for the different roles at WM, and how to write their way to balance in a busy industry. “I learned that I need to put myself out there and focus on my dreams, not my challenges,” mentee Lela Harper reflects. The event included speed mentoring with the HBO staff, inspiring messages from professional women, and guided meditation and intention setting with everyone writing their own mantra card to carry with them. Thank you so much to HBO and WarnerMedia for hosting us! Please see testimonials and highlights below!
“I am grateful to have had the opportunity to communicate with so many skilled women one on one. Each mentor was so giving and informative despite the limited amount of time. The meditation encouraged us to solidify the goals we set over the course of the workshop. A time to realign, replenish, and rediscover your goals,” says mentee Jayli Milan Christopher.
“I had an amazing time talking to HBO and WarnerMedia staff and meeting the other mentees. I feel incredibly lucky to go to these events because I get to meet women in the fields I am passionate about and network with them,” mentee Fiki Hunt tells us.
“I learned that who I am influences my identity in whatever career I decide to pursue,” says mentee Tiffany Roye.
Mentee Victoria Gao writes that she “learned about what it is like to work at a media company and how writing is applicable and powerful in different fields.”
“Getting to speak with mentors and the HBO/WarnerMedia team was beyond amazing,” says mentee Gyana Guity. “I also learned just how special self-wellness and meditation is.”
What was the best part of the afternoon? “The meditation when I felt my heartbeat,” says mentee Kilhah St. Fort. “I was really surprised and awed by the fact that in this moment I’m alive and breathing.”
