Contributors of Girls Write Now On The Art Of The Craft: A Guidebook To Collaborative Storytelling met at Chief’s Flatiron District Clubhouse to discuss the importance of stories for the next generation of women.
New York, NY – September 24, 2024
Chief invited Girls Write Now to their Flatiron District Clubhouse to discuss our book Girls Write Now On The Art Of The Craft: A Guidebook To Collaborative Storytelling (HarperOne, 2024).
The event kicked off with a warm welcome from Chief, which supports professional women across industries, expressing their excitement for partnering with Girls Write Now. Founder and Executive Director of Girls Write Now, Maya Nussbaum, discussed the organization’s synergy with Chief, and “how important it is that new leaders not only tell their stories— but that they decide how their stories are told. This is what Girls Write Now does every day, and how On The Art Of The Craft was created.” Judith Curr, Board Chair of Girls Write Now and President of HarperOne, then spoke about her partnership with the organization, and why she thinks On The Art Of The Craft should be shared with the world.
The evening was anchored by a compelling panel, featuring Senior Community Manager Emily Rigby, mentee alum and Marketing & Web Design Coordinator Julia Andresakis, mentee alum Sophia Torres, and literary agent Monika Woods—all of whom served on the book’s Editorial Advisory Committee. Andresakis and Torres both read aloud their original pieces in the book, as well as their accompanying writing prompts.
Girls Write Now’s process continued to unfold when Chief members joined the conversation, taking time to respond to the book’s prompts and discuss with their neighbors:
Prompt #1: Think of a word or phrase you associate with a specific person. What is the origin of that association? Write a scene in which the phrase plays a significant role in two characters’ communication.
Prompt #2: Write about a moment you overcame a fear or anxiety that wouldn’t go away. How did you feel? What did you do to overcome it?
Following the writing exercises, Rigby facilitated a Q&A session and panelists spoke about the value of mentorship and community, the importance of elevating diverse voices, and why On The Art Of The Craft is a celebration of both the past 25 years of Girls Write Now—and the next era to come.
All Chief members walked away with their very own copy of Girls Write Now On The Art of the Craft, available now for purchase in print and audiobook.
Girls Write Now is grateful to Chief for this fruitful collaboration.
