FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Girls Write Now Fellowship Program is a full-time paid opportunity with an award-winning nonprofit. Fellows play an integral role in the day-to-day operations with core responsibilities across departments from internal programs and operations to external relations through marketing, fundraising, and beyond. Designed to put those interested in nonprofit work on a solid track, Fellows build on and expand their current skills so that they will be well positioned for promotion within Girls Write Now or to be competitive candidates in any career they choose to pursue.
Fellows come to Girls Write Now with a variety of experiences and academic backgrounds ranging in disciplines from gender and Africana studies to creative writing and cognitive science, that help them deliver on Girls Write Now’s multi-pronged mission of transmedia storytelling, mentoring, and community. At this time, Girls Write Now is prioritizing applicants who have experience and interest in event production, college and career programming, supporting a talent pipeline for internships and jobs, along with digital and multimedia skills.
Working in a fast-paced, ever-changing, super-collaborative environment, where work will be iterative and priorities shifting in concert with any given team, while producing deliverables to multiple supervisors, Fellows develop skills in: event production, project management, program evaluation, systems maintenance, design, editorial, and more—all while learning to engage and participate in a diverse and multi-generational community. The toolbox that Fellows gain from their experience at Girls Write Now prepares them to be highly effective leaders in today’s world.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Fellow is a cross-departmental role that involves supporting different departments at Girls Write Now such as Community Programs, Development, Marketing and Operations, and a Fellow’s assignments may rotate between these during the course of the year. Therefore, Girls Write Now is prioritizing detail and systems oriented candidates with interest and experience in the following areas:
- Enrollment and Launch of Year: Coordinate aspects of mentor and mentee recruitment, including outreach, interviews, assessment, training, orientations, and matching of mentee-mentor pairs.
- Corporate Partnership: Facilitate community engagement with corporate partner events across a range of industries, from publishing and entertainment to beauty and finance—partnerships entail employee engagement workshops, in-house mentoring and apprenticeships, internship and job placements, publicity campaigns, and more
- Volunteer Engagement & Management: Motivate and organize high-level volunteers, including active and alum mentors and mentees, identifying and engaging them for select opportunities, events, initiatives, and enriched programming
- Pair Management: Manage assigned case loads of mentor/mentee pairs throughout the program cycle, developing close working relationships with the pairs, and tailoring support to help them meet the program requirements in an environment of shifting priorities.
- Event & Video Production: Support planning and production of program events, which may include multi-genre/multimedia workshops, readings, presentations, salons, employee engagement workshops and special events like the Girls Write Now Awards. We are currently hosting virtual live events in Zoom and prerecorded video events. When it’s safe to do so, support hybrid and in-person events.
Collaborating closely with a small team, the responsibilities of a Girls Write Now Fellow may also include, but are not limited to:
- Data Systems & Operations: Help maintain and update extensive Salesforce database, and meet day-to-day administrative needs across departments and platforms.
- Editorial & Publications: Create and maintain a range of assets for regular news, events, and initiatives; Provide editorial, design and logistical support with annual print and multimedia publications.
- Curriculum Development: Collaborate on curriculum planning and assets creation process, including LMS Development, Training and Tech Support for the community
QUALIFICATIONS
Successful candidates are strong writers, team players, clear communicators, analytical thinkers, systems-oriented, and outside-of-the-box problem solvers. They have strong project management skills, are comfortable working collaboratively and iteratively, pivoting when needed, and getting the job done. Professionals who are in a career transition with solid experience in a field relevant to Girls Write Now’s mission of transmedia storytelling, mentoring, and community are welcome to apply.
Girls Write Now will consider candidates who meet the following qualifications and eligibility criteria:
- An undergraduate degree in a related field or discipline.
- Ability to commit to Girls Write Now’s mission and remain in the role for a minimum of one program year.
- An appreciation for literature, the written word, the arts in education, and youth development.
- Excellent interpersonal, high emotional intelligence, and collaboration skills.
- Effective communication, project management, writing and editing skills
- Knowledgeable and desire to contribute their talents in the realms of media, technology, education, fundraising, operations and community engagement.
- Experience with or willingness to learn software and platforms in use at Girls Write Now: Salesforce, Notion and G-Suite, HTML, WordPress, and basic CSS; design software (InDesign, Photoshop, and Canva); and editing software including iMovie and Premiere Pro (preferred); social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn).
- Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) and two Saturdays per month and periodic evening events.
COMPENSATION
The Girls Write Now Fellow is a full-time non-exempt position. We offer Fellows a competitive annual salary ($50,000) and a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid time off, medical, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts, and 401(k) retirement plan (after 90 days of employment).
