Girls Write Now mentee Alex Berman was interviewed by The New York Times about her work as a freelance writer and illustrator.
“There’s no age requirement for writing professionally— kids can pitch stories to editors at magazines, newspapers, and online publications and be paid like anyone else. Just ask 17-year-old Alex Berman, whose nonfiction writing and art started appearing in online magazines last year. After being mentored through [Girls Write Now] in 2021, Alex started reaching out to magazines for young writers, like jGirls+ Magazine and Blue Marble Review, to pitch stories. She earns about $25 per piece. As an aspiring novelist, she says being paid to do the work she loves feels ‘unthinkable’.”
