The brilliant Tanwi Nandini Islam kicks off our 2016 CHAPTERS Reading Series at the General Society Library on March 18! Join us as our teen girls perform mesmerizing, powerful performances. The event is open to the public (and free for teens!).
Tanwi, author of Bright Lines (Penguin Books, August 2015), is a writer, multimedia artist, and founder of Hi Wildflower Botanica, a handcrafted natural perfume and skincare line. A graduate of Vassar College and Brooklyn College’s MFA program, she lives in Brooklyn. We recently met up with Tanwi who shared just how excited she was to be a part of the CHAPTERS Reading Series. Having previously worked at a mentoring nonprofit, she shared stories about the mentors in her life and understood the importance of Girls Write Now’s mission. We cannot wait to have her join our community!
CHAPTERS is where our girls’ work goes from page to stage, and these talented young writers perform their best work. Each reading opens with a keynote speech from an inspiring writer who embodies the principles we instill in our girls.
This year’s impressive keynote speakers include new authors and fresh voices that are not always represented in the classic canon or on high school reading lists. We are thrilled to include alongside Tanwi Nandini Islam, Mia Alvar, who is a Girls Write Now mentor alum, Angela Flournoy, and Naomi Jackson.
- Grab tickets for our March reading and the rest of the series! Our mentees will be joined by Mia Alvar on April 15, Angela Flournoy on May 20, and Naomi Jackson on June 17.
