This blog post was written by Muse McCormack, Girls Write Now mentee about the May CHAPTERS Reading with Angela Flournoy as keynote.
It seemed like such a small thing to be perched atop a tall stool inside an empty classroom, but it wasn’t. This was the final stop for the mentees presenting at the May CHAPTERS and for the seniors presenting, there would never be another.
Girls filed in, pulling out bottles of water and papers that were silently practiced. Some spoke together in whispers, while others remained in silent reverie, preparing themselves for the awaiting crowd. Nervous excitement filled our voices as we warmed up and thanked Lena Dunham(!!!) for contributing the proceeds of her new book to Girls Write Now.
As we marched down the stairs and into our seats, friendly faces called out and wished us luck. The lights dimmed and the show began.
And what a spectacular show it was! From the powerful reading by the keynote speaker, Angela Flournoy, to the upbeat emcees and of course the amazingly talented readers who made the audience laugh cry, but most importantly think. This night could not have gone better. The Girls Write Now community is a strong one and that is never more apparent than at the CHAPTERS events.
As a senior myself, I will sadly be leaving the Girls Write Now Writing & Mentoring Program, but I intend to stay in touch. Girls Write Now has made me a stronger writer and better person, both of which I will be eternally grateful for and I could not have asked for a better finale to my time here than at the May 2016 CHAPTERS.
