What is Posse?
Posse is a merit-based leadership scholarship that is awarded to groups of 10 students—Posses—every year. Each Posse attends college at one of Posse New York’s partner colleges and universities, where each Posse Scholar receives a four-year, full-tuition scholarship! Posse Scholars also participate in an in-depth program that includes social, academic and career support.
You can only apply to the Posse Scholarship Program if you are nominated. Lucky for you, Girls Write Now has eight open nominee spots ready for our dedicated mentees!
Who Can be Nominated for Posse?
Posse is open to all rising high school seniors (current juniors) considering applying to college. Nominations begin at the end of your junior year. If you receive a nomination spot, you will complete an application by the end of June, then move on to your first interview in August or September of your senior year.
I want to be Nominated for Posse! What should I do?
Step 1: Research, research, research!
Because there are three phases to the Posse nomination process, make sure you are 100% sure about what the scholarship can offer you. Senior year is a busy time for many mentees, but if you’re ready for the commitment we will absolutely support you along the way!
A few important details to look into in your research:
- The colleges and universities available to Posse scholars (these will be the only schools you are able to choose from should you receive a Posse Scholarship, so make sure to see if what they offer is what you’re looking for in a school!)
- Posse Interview Schedule (in four phases, known as the Dynamic Assessment Processes, or DAP):
- DAP 0, May-June: Nominations + Application Submission
- DAP 1, August-September: First interview
- DAP 2, September-October: Second interview
- DAP 3, December: Final group interview of 20-25 students; university officials will be present
- Learn a little bit about Posse’s history and explore their website (especially the New York Posse section and their Mission!)
Step 2: Consider attending an Open House! (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
Posse will be hosting Virtual Open Houses to give potential nominees a detailed run-down of the Posse Scholarship process. There will be Posse staff available to answer any questions you may have about the program that you might not have found answered anywhere else. Sign up for one of Posse’s Virtual Open Houses!
Step 3: Let us know!
Reach out to Fellow Sally Familia at [email protected] by Thursday, June 15, 2023 if you are interested in being nominated for the Posse Scholarship and let us know if you’ve attended a Posse Open House (or plan to)!
Note: We will be following up with those who have expressed interest in the Posse Scholarship. Because we have limited nomination slots, we will not be able to accommodate all requests for nomination.
Girls Write Now Mentees become Posse Scholars
This year, Girls Write Now mentee Kayla Morgan was awarded a Posse four-year, full-tuition scholarship to Middlebury College!
“Girls Write Now has played an integral role in making my college dreams come true! From my mentor Nupur’s helpful feedback and support with my college essay, to the informational Girls Write Now workshops—I am so grateful for the guidance you have all provided me…My single mother, who doesn’t have much experience in the American educational system, no longer has to worry about how she will pay for a private education or how I will reach my professional career goals. Most young people in my neighborhood do not have the same opportunities that I am lucky to have received, but what we do share, are the difficult experiences we go through living in East New York/Brownsville. And so, when I won the Posse Scholarship, I felt like their voices and dreams were also being honored.”
