Spring may seem a long way off, but we’re already looking ahead — to our 2014 CHAPTERS Reading Series! Each year, every girl in our Writing and Mentoring Program (and some mentors, too) stands in the spotlight in front of a crowd of hundreds and performs an original work. It’s anxiety-producing for some and an exhilarating experience for others. For each mentee, it’s a chance to see themselves in the world of professional writers and for everybody to experience the power of their voices.
Save the date for this year’s readings: we’re gearing up for four amazing evenings, taking place at the state-of-the-art Scholastic Auditorium in SoHo.
- Friday, March 21, 6-8 PM: Amy Fusselman
- Friday, April 25, 6-8 PM: Farai Chideya
- Friday, May 30, 6-8 PM: Ana Castillo
- Friday, June 20, 6-8 PM: Christina Baker Kline
Snag your tickets now — suggested donation of $20 for adults, and free for teens!
Videos and behind the scenes
Want to get a taste of what you can expect? Mentor Hadia and mentee Carmin wrote a piece together about what their identities meant to them and to others, while mentee Karla wrote about meeting her half-brother for the first time.
Plus, get behind the scenes at last year’s CHAPTERS Reading Series. What’s it like to step up to the mic in front of 200 people?
Check out Luljeta’s hilarious memoir about knitting with her grandmother:
“In those moments of ruined concentration an ‘OW!’ or a ‘freaking hell!’ would slip through my lips. I look back to those days and think: Damn, I was an angry 10 year old.”
