Mattel rolls out Barbie based on journalist, anti-lynching activist and suffragette Ida B. Wells
The doll manufacturer also announced that it will partner with Girls Write Now to provide “girls and gender-expansive young adults with $25,000 in programs empowering them to share their stories,” Mattel’s Barbie account said on Twitter.

Mississippi Journalist Ida B. Wells Honored with New Barbie Doll
To honor Wells’ legacy as a writer and leader, Barbie is partnering with Girls Write Now, a nonprofit dedicated to mentoring the next generation of writers and leaders while breaking down barriers of gender, race, age, and poverty. Through a donation from the Barbie Dream Gap Fund, Girls Write Now will provide high school girls across the nation with writing and publishing programs. Barbie will also host a virtual event on February 18 with Michelle Duster, the great granddaughter of Ida B. Wells.
Barbie Announces New Ida B. Wells Doll As Part Of Inspiring Women Series
Along with the new doll, the company is partnering with Girls Write Now, a nonprofit aimed at offering mentorship for the next generation of up-and-coming writers and leaders. Barbie will be working through its Dream Gap Project donation to provide writing and publishing programs for high school girls and gender expansive groups. Barbie will also be hosting a virtual Dream Gap event featuring Wells’ great-granddaughter Michelle Duster as a speaker.
