Virtual event; open to all mentees, all mentors, program alum, and the public
Counts towards monthly Community Studio requirement for mentees and mentors!
In this Community Studio you will learn about Girls Write Now’s NextGen Philanthropy Initiative, entitled The Story Changes Minds. What we have always had to give is our Time, our Stories, and access to our Communities. Money, or the lack thereof, has often prevented us from viewing ourselves through a philanthropic lens.
We’re raising a generation of philanthropists—givers and advocates—from among our next generation of leaders. Girls Write Now will provide mentees, and our community-at-large, greater control over our world and our own destinies, all while blazing a trail for those who follow. Girls Write Now’s Next-Gen Philanthropist Initiative encourages everyone to participate in philanthropy REIMAGINED, redefined by us in the same way we have redefined the definition of “storyteller.”
In December’s NextGen Philanthropy Studio, we’ll welcome community member Dana Huber, Mentor-on-Demand and Director, Programs and Strategic Learning at The New York Women’s Foundation, who will lead a conversation on Decolonizing Philanthropy. The phrase, introduced by writer and activist Edgar Villanueva, speaks to centering investment in community-driven approaches, and also to and expanding our re-imagining once limited definition of philanthropy. There will be video clips, music, and an opportunity for us to collectively brainstorm what giving might look like for us.
With a background in public health, Dana Huber is the Director, Programs & Strategic Learning at The New York Women’s Foundation. In her role, she focuses on a range of areas, including disability justice, economic justice and strategic learning. She has more than a decade of experience in consulting and philanthropy related to women’s health. Currently, Dana is also a PhD student at the CUNY School of Public Health, focused on community health and health policy. She resides in Queens in New York City.
Girls Write Now’s Next-Gen Philanthropist Initiative is redefining and REIMAGINING philanthropy through educating and supporting the next generation of leaders. We invite active and alum mentors and mentees along with community members interested in redefining philanthropy to join us on a journey to think and act differently. We hope to launch our own initiative in 2024.
Next-Gen Philanthropy Committee will meet monthly during the 2023-2024 Girls Write Now Collaboratory. Mentors, mentees, alumni, and members of the public are welcome to attend our meetings.
