Midnight Messages From a River
This piece is incredibly special to me; it’s about the beautiful, messy process of letting go.
To Future Fariya
I imagined what I would like to say to myself 15 years in the future.
Pledge of Allegiance (Revised)
Pledge of Allegiance: Revised” is a subversion of the American Dream through the lens of mental wellbeing; “gifted” is a gilded promise unraveled by statistics and a vow to embrace the strength of vulnerability.
You are the Ball and We are the Touchdown
This project includes excerpts from a working anthology in progress. I included three poems which I feel represent the shaping of my femininity. I attempted to contrast my relationship with my mother, father and stepfather with interactions between myself and men in the world. Alongside these poems, I drew rough sketches which I felt best accompanied these poems. I have always loved to doodle, but have always confined them to the margins of my math homework. I got out of my comfort zone by merging the media of writing and art.
Nebula
A reading of the poem Nebula, accompanied by the art of Flow.
Surveillance
In a world where speech is heavily monitored, Hannan is left reeling after spotting her former friend at a protest. She attempts to tell her sister, wary of who might be listening.
By the Waterfront
WNYC Transmitter Park is a staple afternoon park for many, located at the bank of the East River. When observing the park and Greenpoint overall, I realize just how much it’s changed.
Bruised Skies
A combination of photos taken this spring, as I prepared to graduate high school, along with poems attempting to capture a range of emotions I’ve struggled to articulate.
A Warm Place
A story about barnyard animals who used to be friends.
A War Between The Mind & Heart
A short story that follows the feelings of the main character of my WIP novel.
I Notice.
The city is full of sights and sounds, so maybe it is time we look around. On a journey in hopes to make others notice, I present to you my little green notebook.
Hopeless Causes
Bordering the line between patient and friend, Dr. Olivia Bowen and Crystal Chavez discuss an incident that has affected one of Crystal’s relationships. The two work through ‘the incident’, showing Dr. Bowen’s intentions are not what they seem.
Exile of the Innocent
When I look at this piece, I see someone who is maturing and moving forward with their life, but first, they have to let go of something holding them back. I can also envision a parent letting go.
Full Body (Laughter)
Look me in the eyes when I laugh. Look at our Black bodies that aren’t just bodies and our Black laughter that will never know death, even when we do. Even if we do.
