Honing your Personal Statement with HarperCollins

HarperCollins and Girls Write Now meet for an intergenerational exchange to help young writers take their college application personal statements to the next level.
In light of the Supreme Court’s recent affirmative action ruling, it is vital for young writers to find the words to write about authentic lived experiences in genuine and organic ways, and provide context, complexity, and depth that serve their story through their college personal statements. Teaching Artist, Susanna Horng and HarperCollins employees are here to help!
After mentees have a short lesson in writing the personal statement and dedicated time to draft their essays, HarperCollins employees—“Mentors for the Day”— will work with mentees to strengthen their essays in small group breakout rooms. Mentees will give and receive constructive feedback on their drafts, or partial drafts, using our Active Listening technique, a tried and true methodology.
Mentors will also answer questions about their college and career journeys. Don’t miss this opportunity to work on your personal statement while enjoying an intergenerational gathering of insight, networking and wisdom!

Susanna Horng
Susanna Horng is a writer and Clinical Professor at NYU Liberal Studies. Her stories and poems have appeared in Bennington Review, Minerva Rising and The Rumpus. She has been supported by Catwalk Art Institute, a NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship, and a Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship.
