For more than two decades, the nationally award-winning nonprofit Girls Write Now has broken down the barriers of gender, race, age & poverty, elevating the voices of writers who are too often not heard—or worse, silenced.
An Array of Writing & Mentoring Programs that Engage & Inspire
Girls Write Now uses writing as a vehicle to build real relationships and offer holistic services for teen girls and gender-expansive youth from systemically disadvantaged backgrounds—mentoring them throughout high school, college, career and beyond.
Our mentees are aspiring writers ranging in age from 13-24, and our mentors are a diverse group of dedicated professionals 25-85+. Mentors and mentees hail from all five boroughs, across the nation, and originally from around the world.
All writing and mentoring programs include:
- intensive one-to-one mentoring relationships
- community workshops that build a wide range of writing skills
- presentation & publication opportunities
- wellness-minded programming
- college and career development
We also offer employees from our corporate partners light-touch opportunities to “mentor for the day” by sharing their personal and professional journeys and passing on their craft.
Writing 360 Program
Writing 360 is our flagship writing and mentoring program, matching young women and gender expansive youth with professional writers for a one-to-one mentorship and community writing experience structured around creative, critical and digital skill-based programming and services. Think of this as “Intro to Writing”, where mentors and mentees explore a wide range of genres and media, from poetry, fiction, memoir, journalism and screen/playwriting, to podcasting, animation, video editing and more.
Publishing 360 Program
Publishing 360 is our advanced writing and mentoring program, matching young women and gender expansive youth with professional writers for a one-to-one mentorship and community writing experience. The Publishing 360 Program structure and approach mirrors the flagship Writing 360 Program but takes a deeper dive into advanced digital storytelling by sharpening your visual and audio production skills. Mentors and mentees edit their own and others’ work and share the collective stories of the next generation.
