Photopoetry: A Synthesis of Photography and Poetry

Online | Open to all mentees, all mentors, woman-identifying and trans* and gender-expansive members of the public

In this workshop, we will learn about composition and angles in photography, delve into similarities and differences between poems and photographs, and explore how photopoetry unites poets and photographers. We will investigate how good photopoems add depth and context to both the photo and the poem while remaining open to interpretation—extending an invitation to imaginative engagement. Applying the lessons learned, participants will use their smartphones, computers, and imagination to create a photograph in response to a poem—and in so doing, create a photopoem of their own!

Heart on Your Sleeve: Personal Storytelling Through Tattoos

Join Stacey Fayant as she takes us on a journey through the history and current revitalization of indigenous tattooing, cultural appropriation vs. cultural sharing, and important health and safety concepts related to tattooing. Participants will be introduced to the drawing app Sketchbook and will create their own tattoo design– telling a personal story or history represented by plants or flowers of their choice.

In this workshop Writer and Director Lagueria Davis will teach about different types of documentaries and share the process of screenwriting for participatory documentaries. You'll hear about the sweet victories and the frustrating challenges, the truth and the myths, as well as the ins and outs of framing a documentary film. Join us to learn how to honor your unique voice and experience, while gaining the skills and insight to write personal voice over. It's all about your unique point of view and the choices you make in telling your story.

Sharing Our Collective Story: Video for Performance & Digital Storytelling

Online | Open to all mentees, all mentors, woman-identifying and trans* and gender-expansive members of the public

Want to learn how video can be used for storytelling and self-expression? Join us for this cutting-edge workshop in which multimedia artist Lani Asunción will share aspects of their interdisciplinary performative practice. Participants will explore conceptualizing performance for video through capturing movement, sound, and artistic rituals. Lani will discuss fundamental elements of video production and teach us video editing on a non-linear timeline using the video editing app VITA. Participants will create their own video and collectively we will share our narratives in the form of performative storytelling.

Tell it Through Jokes: The Joys and Benefits of Stand-Up Comedy

In this workshop, we will learn the basics of stand-up comedy writing, giving special attention to the ways stand-up can be a tool for activism and awareness around pertinent social issues. Participants will gain an understanding of thoughtful comedy writing, what not to do in stand-up, and how to intentionally engage audience members and will have the opportunity to write jokes either for themselves or for Teaching Artist and stand up comedian Annabel Young. Don't miss this opportunity to learn that stand-up is a medium for everyone—a medium with multiple benefits and applications that has the power to change the world...one joke at a time.

Co-creating Future: Augmented Reality As Crystal Ball

Open to all mentees, all mentors, program alum, woman-identifying and trans* and gender-expansive members of the public

In this workshop, inspired by the I Ching, an ancient text of Chinese wisdom and the world's oldest oracle, artist and educator Zhenzhen Qi takes us through a variety of cultural divination practices to collectively design new or alternative patterns for fortune-telling. As a group, using the software development environment Lens Studio, we will code these patterns into a Snapchat AR filter to develop our own fortune-telling software experience. No prior software design or development experience is needed!

The Art of Songwriting: Shaping Moods with Lyrics & Song Structure

In this workshop, you’ll discover the underlying principles of song composition. Musician SassyBlack will break down popular song structures for us and we will look into what makes a catchy song. Participants will get a chance to write their own mood shifting lyrics and will gain an overview of the songwriting process.

In this workshop, GWN Mentor and fan culture expert Elizabeth Minkel will give a brief primer on fanfiction before diving into a variety of craft exercises. With a focus on characterization, perspective, tone, and plot, participants will create their own fanfiction story.
