“‘Stories written by other girls and women with perspectives just as unique as my own aided my survival. They taught me that my experience mattered. They taught me that what I had to say mattered. They taught me that writing could be a tool of liberation.“
– JANET MOCK, Author & MSNBC Host & Girls Write Now Award Honoree
The fourth annual Girls Write Now Awards was a night to remember. At the breathtaking Three Sixty° Tribeca, we honored authors, directors, and storytellers — leaders who write the world.
As Janet Mock, recipient of our Trailblazer Award, said, “Telling our stories is a revolutionary act.” And we agree. That is why, with the support of the 300 people in the room and our expanding Girls Write Now family, we are embarking on a revolution of our own. As we prepare to double the number of girls served, and enhance our programs and services, we know one thing: you can make it happen. We met our fundraising goal for the event and plan to build on this momentum.
Fusion anchor and special correspondent, Alicia Menendez and Girls Write Now mentee Kirby Estar-Laguerre were our emcees as we presented our prestigious awards to: Jenni Konner, HBO’s Girls executive producer, director, and writer, and co-founder of LennyLetter.com with Lena Dunham; Janet Mock, author of Redefining Realness and Firsts, and host of MSNBC’s SoPOPular!; and John Osborn, CEO of BBDO New York, creators of the Barbie “Imagine the Possibilities” campaign. They all expressed the importance of helping young women find their voice no matter the path their life takes.
