“palatable” is a product of my experiences as a young black girl at a predominantly white school. Particularly, it’s my examination of the concept of palatability, and what it means to prepare yourself for consumption.
Class of 2021
Night Swimming at Summer Camp in New Hampshire
The girls swim in the lake at summer camp. It is the only place around them that is cool.
Forever Queens/ The End of the N
We wrote two poems about our relationship to our residing borough, Queens. (Lilly is a lifelong native and Toni moved to Astoria five years ago.)
I’m Happy
A piece that has been waiting too long to say what needed to be said, out loud and to the world. Regardless of everything that has happened this year, I’m happy to be alive!
Full House (with the K.M.A)
My family and the K.M.A are as tight as sticky labels on glass bottles: they’re hard to separate, but they often look better together.
Scary Things/Midsummer
These pieces explore my ideas on love, loss, and emotional validation. They’re the products of a girl who got lost inside her own head for too long.
The King of Hearts
The King of Hearts is random from a deck of cards where truly the title is meaningless but the poem somehow makes it seem relevant.
It Wasn’t Your Fault
To contemplation and betrayal.
Selected Poems
Writing poetry has served as an outlet to relieve stress during this anxiety-filled year. I’ve poured many of my feelings into these poems, some of which are selected here.
tears of the past
Sometimes, we surprise ourselves in the ways we act in certain situations that life throws at us. This piece tells of my first encounter with this lesson.
Versions of our selves
These are poems we wrote, together and separately, while reflecting on the theme of transformation—these poems are about all the different versions of ourselves we hold at once.
of remembrance and regret
This essay is a tribute to my grandmother and an immortalization of my biggest regret.
Siempre Boricua
This poem focuses on my experience growing up in Brooklyn, New York. It addresses the challenges and stereotypes that Puerto Ricans face in the neighborhood.
[Entries From A Not-So-Muggle-Muggle]

The Crows
Broken family ties and ominous crows haunt Jo as she faces the dangers of the forest.
