Career 360 Mentors
Background
Navigating your career path is not easy, especially after a global pandemic. Awareness and accountability around diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging has increased, but are oftentimes not reflected in companies’ hiring practices and work culture.
Did you know?
- Women account for 47.75 of the global workforce but only 27.1% are managers and leaders.
- The gender pay gap is growing with women earning 22% less than men in monthly wages. In the US, every dollar men earn, women earn $0.82.
- In 2021, women held 30% of S&P 500 board seats but only 5.7% of these seats were held by women of color.
- 33% of women have never had substantial interaction with senior leaders about work, which can make the difference when the time comes to fill a new leadership role.
The Mentor Role
You do not need to be a professional career coach! Your focus as a mentor is helping mentees gain clarity and confidence on their career pathways. Many mentees are looking to get their foot in the door, others are ready for advancement, and some are actively seeking a new position. You will provide guidance, insight and leadership tools while keeping your mentee accountable for achieving their career journey objectives. In tandem with Girls Write Now’s curriculum, staff support, and other resources, you will act as your mentee’s thought partner and give authentic feedback on their professional development.
This is your chance to apply all of the workforce knowledge you’ve accrued over the years to make a real impact on those who will benefit the most. All of your experiences are beneficial to hear about—even the painful ones you no doubt learned from! Our mentees are hungry for your words of wisdom—the advice you wish you could have given your younger self. They are eager for honest conversation about what to expect at work, how to navigate inevitable challenges, and especially for inspiration to bring their important ideas and diverse perspectives to the table.
