Writing & Wellness Events for Women, Trans* & Gender-expansive Creatives
As one mentor put it, Girls Write Now events are “the cure for writer’s block.” We offer an array of writing-centered events to our community and to the public—and even virtually, our spaces are welcoming, inspiring, and empowering.
We come together to create multi-genre, multimedia work, share perspectives, hone professional skills, and support each other on the path to wellness both for ourselves and our communities. Join our mailing list to get weekly event updates!
Refining Your Short Story: A Feedback and Revision Workshop with Penguin Random House
We’re excited to be joined by a team of editors from Penguin Random House, who will help you revise one of your original short stories. Their expertise will not only assist in elevating your story but also offer valuable insights to help you grow as a writer. This event is for Fiction Journey mentees and mentors only.
NY Peace Institute: Intro to Restorative Justice and Restorative Practices
This January, New York Peace Institute, the official community dispute resolution center for Brooklyn and Manhattan, is offering a 2-day Introduction to Restorative Justice and Restorative Practices Training open to all undergraduate college students in New York City. We are calling for any undergraduate student leaders or representatives for a student organization to take this training.
College Chat – Scholarships & Fellowships: Getting Funding for School
Girls Write Now is excited to host a panel featuring undergraduate and graduate students, along with Girls Write Now alum, from diverse disciplines, areas of study, and universities. These panelists are recipients of prestigious fellowships and scholarships and will share their experiences in a Q&A format.
They’ll discuss their college journeys, highlighting how specific fellowships or scholarships helped them pursue their academic and personal aspirations. Attendees will gain valuable insights and actionable tips for discovering funding opportunities available at various institutions and strategies to position themselves as strong applicants at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The World of Prompts
This month, we'll be using history, newspapers and archival material to generate writing prompts!
Career Readiness: Tips, Tricks & Triumphs
In this final fall studio, we'll pair accountability partners, practice interview skills, and hear from a mentee on building her network and learning from interviews. Everyone will share their progress. No prior attendance needed, and mentors are welcome.
Peer Pair Support Studio
This month, each participant writes a letter of encouragement to their peer, reflecting on strengths, growth, and their shared journey. This helps foster appreciation and connection, reinforcing their partnership.
Rooted in Nature: Turning Creativity into Environmental Advocacy
In this studio, we explore creative writing and art-making that reflects on the relationship between humans and native plants and encourage participants to turn their creative process into environmental advocacy projects.
This month, we'll discuss the various ways we can spread awareness to the public about contributing to a healthier environment. Additionally, we will be exploring writing and art and how we can use them as tools to advocate for a healthier world.
Audio/Podcasting Career Chat
This Chat will explore the essential attributes and pathways to positions within the audio and podcasting industries. Here is your chance to ask all of your burning questions with a panel that covers everything from podcast production to audiobooks!
Mentor Support Group/Think Tank
The Mentor Support Group/Think Tank is a space for mentors to meet up and talk about their GWN experience — the pluses and minuses. This studio functions like a support group and a think tank, in which we exchange ideas on engaging our mentee, as well as discussing solutions for issues and sharing resources.
Finding Your Voice: Creating Memorable POV in Fiction
This month, we'll discuss editing for voice, including what "close POV" means and how to achieve it in 1st and 3rd person. We’ll also do editing exercises to explore ways to make our narrators' voices more specific.
