4 Very Unfiltered Teen Girls
By Nyasia Bailey, Writing 360 Mentee
This piece was inspired by wanting to make a podcast that’s more relatable and entertaining to kids my age. From personal experience, it can be unnerving to hear the far-fetched stories or heavy topics that most podcasts offer. My idea was to switch it up by letting people into a conversation between my friends and me that’s not too intellectual, but a comfortable setting where you can laugh at or with us.
Process
The idea to create this piece came from a late night with my friends. Past 2 a.m., we had a lot on our minds and needed to get some things off our chests. I used the app Anchor to produce this trailer, along with GarageBand to pre-record audio. On Anchor, I added sound for the intro/outro and to set the mood of the podcast. The original segment was actually longer than the trailer, so I had to edit it to capture the energy of the podcast.
Meet the Pair
MENTEE NYASIA BAILEY& MENTOR JAZMYN TUBERVILLE
Nyasia Anecdote: When Girls Write Now told us we would each get our own mentor, I was excited about the idea of having a personal guide to help me navigate through my first year. It was a bit nerve-racking meeting Jazmyn the first time and I was worried that I didn’t measure up to what she was expecting. After the first couple of our meetings, I realized that her expectations for me were to see me reach my personal milestones. Jazmyn always wants me to push myself to become more confident, but she is patient with my growth and values me and my choices as a writer.
Jazmyn Anecdote: Nyasia’s journey to becoming a more confident writer has been truly inspirational to witness. When I first met Nyasia, she shared that she wanted to become a journalist one day and would like to go on to do profile writing in her professional career. Over our time together this program year, I’ve watched a shy, sweet girl from Manhattan blossom into a fearless young woman ready to take her place in history. I’m so proud and excited for Nyasia’s beautiful and truly “from-the-heart” work to make its debut in the Girls Write Now anthology and into the world!
