anxiety
By Faith Destiny
At one time or another, we’ve all experienced loneliness and/or anxiety.
Now more than ever, teenagers are constantly being mentally attacked and feel like there is no way out. I want to show that although times get rough and people leave, you will always be permanent in your own life and battles against anxiety, loneliness, and any other mental disease. The only way out is through. Fight for your happiness because you deserve it.
Process
Before now, I had never thought about combining both of the things I loved doing in this way. Concluding the final minutes of an anxiety attack, the idea of the poem dawned on me. Post-writing, I shared it with my mentor Katy, who came up with the brilliant idea of combining dancing with poetry. Despite hating to hear my voice on the recording, which was an obstacle I had to overcome, I went to the New-York Historical Society and recorded the poem, which I happened to be very pleased with. After finishing filming the dance, I felt very proud and pleased with how developed the piece had become.
Meet the Pair
MENTEE FAITH DESTINY & MENTOR KATHRYN CARDIN
Faith’s Anecdote: Katy is like my big sister—in every sense of the word. Not only does she develop my talents as a writer, but she also listens to my problems. She understands my anger if something had upset me in the past week, but, unlike my friends, is able to give me clear, coherent advice. She’s relatable and listens to all of my crazy writing ideas, and helps me bring many of them to life. Katy is beyond talented and anyone would be lucky to have a mentor as compassionate, talented, and thoughtful as she is.
Kathryn’s Anecdote: Returning to high school can seem nightmarish to many, but if I could go back and befriend Faith at age seventeen I would. Poetry is not my first language (or second), but Faith’s writing has opened my eyes to the genre. She is self-aware, honest, and adroit—the embodiment of a good and thoughtful writer. Our meetings have been cathartic, and our talks the highlight of my week. I can’t wait to see what she chooses to do with her future, and I hope to be a part of it.
