Process

I originally made a podcast, but it got lost. So I decided instead to create a Canva piece depicting cartoon girls getting together on the beach. I was inspired by the idea of females and the word “history.” Challenges that I encountered were knowing what elements to put on the poster and where to put them.

Mentee Alicia Maxwell & Mentor Rebecca Miller

Alicia’s Anecdote: My mentor happens to be a beautiful woman who is going to go far one day. That day being every day. Rebecca is a woman that has built a life off of her pain. A pain she could’ve kept hidden, but decided to share with the world. She lives her life to the fullest, not letting nothing stop her. As I’ve gotten to know her this past year, she’s become like a big sister. Giving me her love, kindness, and ICE CREAM.

Rebecca’s Anecdote: Our culture is starved for truth-tellers. I came into Girls Write Now expecting to help a young girl muster the courage to share her deepest truths. Instead, I was matched with Alicia, whose fearless honesty and integrity have made her a role model to me. Those qualities also make her a brilliant observer and writer: one who’s kind but doesn’t suffer fools, who cracks amazing jokes, who eats deadlines for breakfast. Alicia, I hope you know you can always turn to me if you need someone to cheer you on, or just to share a laugh and some ice cream.
