My Apple Pie
It is a heartwarming story of making a baked good with love, with a family member you love.
With a push and press of the dough, kneaded until tough and feels like the texture of your skin. Flour spread all over the countertop and all over you. From your face to your apron like magic dust creatively sprinkled with a smile from ear to ear. As you watch grandma cut the apples, you sprinkle the cinnamon and brown sugar and put a lot to make sure it is extra tasty. With a stern look but knowing it is loving from grandma telling you, you know you put too much, you place the apples in the pan with the dough on top. You create your initials and put the letters on top knowing that you sealed the recipe for the perfect apple pie made by my grandma and me. We laugh and giggle as we toss the flower around dancing to the music that the radio turns on. The love that I feel when I’m baking with Grandma is the most magical feeling in the world. She slaps my fingers away as I reach into the oven and she yells “No it is not done” I groan with frustration because the smell is so appealing all I want is a slice to eat. My sister walks in because she smelled something good from upstairs. I then tell her “No it isn’t done.” Grandma washes the dishes and cleans up the flour. Once all the flour is gone the magic has stopped until we get to try the baked good. Grandma pulls the pie out of the oven golden like a star. I can’t wait to eat my apple pie and the magic of my taste buds has just begun.
Process
The inspiration for this piece was a prompt about a food you love to make in English class. I wrote about an experience with my grandma creating our favorite baked goods. I learned that anything can make an experience, music, laughter, and the people you choose to spend time with.
