Nancy Drew, Sherlock Holmes, Who Else?
By Kathy Wang
This year, I decided that I was going to improve my mystery-writing skills, as I had always been an avid mystery reader. I think my podcast sums up my love for it and what I’m trying to do with my works!
Process
I got this idea during the Girls Write Now podcast workshop! I used the app Anchor, and it was a really fun experience. I messed up so many times that I almost gave up in the process, but I think my finished work was better than I expected. It made me ecstatic when I finished! And after listening to my voice over and over again, it became more bearable, and I don’t wince as much when listening to the final product.
Meet the Pair
MENTEE KATHY WANG & MENTOR NICOLE JONES
Kathy’s Anecdote: Nicole has honestly been an absolute role model. I look forward to every single one of our meetings. She’s soft-spoken and very kind, and never runs out of good writing ideas I could adapt. I love talking about her dog the most! We both bond over the fact that we’re the oldest siblings of the family, and what it’s like to be a girl while being the eldest. Overall, I think Nicole is super fun. My writing has improved greatly because of her.
Nicole’s Anecdote: I was so impressed with Kathy from the moment we met. Her intelligence and enthusiasm are an inspiration. The afternoon of orientation at the New-York Historical Society, after oohing and aahing over paintings and Tiffany lamps, I remember talking about books she loved and bonding over how reading had opened up the world for both of us. Kathy and I meet at the Center for Fiction now, and getting to know her has been the most fun. It’s a joy to watch her writing grow and a privilege to be entrusted with reading her work!
