Women supporting women! This was the powerful message felt by all when extraordinary women came together for The DVF Awards at the United Nations on April 23rd, including our very own Maya Nussbaum, Girls Write Now’s founder and executive director. Marking its 6th year, the DVF Awards honors and supports women who have dedicated their lives to giving back. “Women who have had the courage to fight, the power to survive, and the leadership to inspire,” is what the DVF Awards is about says Diane von Furstenberg.
Maya was nominated for the “People’s Voice Award,” an honor that acknowledges Maya’s leadership in running a US-based grassroots organization that is improving the world. Said Nussbaum about the evening: “What an awe-inspiring room full of women leaders, thinkers, activists, and artists. We depend on each other and the world depends on these women.”
Along with Diane von Furstenberg and co-host Tina Brown, other notables coming out to show their support included: Hillary Clinton, Naomi Campbell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Dakota Fanning, and Gloria Steinem, Girls Write Now’s 2014 honoree for the Girls Write Now Awards.
Ambassador Melanne Verveer was given the LIfetime Leadership Award: “I have seen first-hand how women are on the front lines of change everywhere.”
Vital Voices’ Adimaimalaga Tafuna’i and Samar Minallah Khan spoke and Gabrielle Giffords accepted an Inspiration Award with Becky Straw and Jody Landers accepting the “People’s Voice Award.”
