The Week Ahead:
Saturday, January 18th, 2-4 pm ET, Literature to Life: I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter: Literature to Life adapts Erika L. Sánchez’s YA novel as their newest title in their Signature Performance series. This title will be co-produced in partnership with Freedom Reads, the only organization in the nation transforming the experience of incarceration by opening libraries in prison housing facilities. Freedom Reads was founded by Reginald Dwayne Betts in 2020. I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter takes place in modern day Chicago. The novel focuses on the idea of finding one’s own identity, and breaking free from societal, cultural, and familial expectations.

Thursday, Jan. 23, 7-8:15 PM ET, Committee on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging: Aligning Communications to Our Values: At this meeting, we will discuss our plans to institute our values of trust, evolution, community, creativity , and expression. What do these terms mean to you and how do you embody them? As we head into our third decade at Girls Write, we want to lay a solid foundation for the next stage.

Saturday, January 25, 2-4 pm ET, Plays to Comic Books & Comic Books to Plays! Let’s Get Episodic:Many playwrights use their skills in dramatic storytelling, breaking story, world-building, and strong dialogue to foster new work not just in theater but in television, graphic novels, and musicals. We’ll explore these skills in several fun short writing exercises, and take one of them to explore in a new medium for you.
