At our first Editorial Forum of the program year, we'll discuss the themes and ideas that Girls Write Now has been writing about for the past 25 years and look to the future to think about the ideas we want to represent with our work moving forward.
At our first Editorial Workshop, current mentees will read through and select a piece written by a former mentee from the past 25 years. We will discuss all the ways that a writer can respond to an existing work: fanfiction, sequels, essays, art, and more! Come explore the ways you can bring your own perspective and collaborate from mentees past!
In this workshop, Mentees and Mentee alum will unlock their confidence, discover professional best practices, and learn to leverage their already existing network of family, friends, teachers, and of course each other. After engaging in a brief networking lesson, Mentees will partake in a “mock” Girls Write Now industry mixer, so we invite all participants to show up ready to mingle! Prior to the session’s close, mentees will have the opportunity to apply their new networking savvy by committing to connect with at least one other mentee in attendance and drafting a follow up message!
At our first Writing 360 workshop, mentees and mentors will delve into true crime as a subject, with the specific aim of creating poetry that honors victims and their stories. This generative poetry workshop will explore the ways that poetry can act as a social justice and activism device in the context of true crime, and how we can uplift the stories of true crime victims that often go untold. In this workshop, Mady will take you on a journey through the world of graphic design, showing you how to create a striking poster that both delights the eye and motivates your audience. Explore the power of design as a call to action for what you care most about using your imagination and the design platform Canva.
In this Professional Development Session, we will look at characteristics of great mentors, explore the essentials of successful mentorship relationships, learn about mentoring pedagogies, review the difference between intentions & goals, learn how to identify red flags and what to do about them, and explore goal-setting techniques.
Join Girls Write Now for an intergenerational exchange to help young writers take their college application personal statements to the next level! Lead by writer and NYU professor Susanna Horng, and with the support of mentors, mentees will explore their own unique story and how they can transform their lived experience into a powerful personal statement!
Through the winning tag team of writer Anna Homayoun and educator Tom Rabbitt, participants in this workshop will learn the tips and tricks they need to stare down each of the “scaries” lurking in the college (and post-graduate!) application process—from creating a list of top choices to winning the scholarship of your dreams.
In this Editorial Forum, we'll discuss how we can create a safe space for creativity at Girls Write Now and what we think it will look like to be a writer on the internet in the future.
