Flowers for Georgia
By Caitlin Levy
My dad and I love art history, and we wanted to bring to light stories of women who have carved and sculpted their place in history! There are so many inspiring women today, but also many women who may be in the shadows of history—and who should be kept alive. This work was a challenge given that I had never worked on a piece through a media platform before. The piece is a product of my learning process and the new mode of storytelling I tried, and the writing I always do!
Process
When we had the workshop about podcasting, I thought it seemed like such a great way to talk about something I cared about. My dad and I both love art history, so I thought we could make a podcast about women in art who have carved out places for themselves in history. I used the app Anchor, which was really helpful. I learned that more planning than I had previously thought goes into putting out content for a podcast; especially given I had to coordinate times to work on it with my dad. It was definitely a challenge to figure out times when we could both work on it as well as write a script that was interesting and felt natural. When I finished the project, I felt so excited about continuing with it and keeping up with the podcast.
Meet the Pair
MENTEE CAITLIN LEVY & MENTOR CELIA ALICATA
Caitlin’s Anecdote: I still remember how excited I was when I first met Celia! I saw that she was my mentor, and I ran up to her and gave her a big hug. I was just so grateful to have her. It still feels like that when I see her every week. I feel so privileged to have someone who is not only so kind and giving but also someone to look up to, as a woman who’s carved out such an amazing path for herself. She is a mentor in every sense of the word. I can’t explain how magical it is to have someone who believes in the beauty of your dreams. She encourages me to believe in myself and point my eyes to the stars. I’m so lucky to have her.
Celia’s Anecdote: I warmly recall first meeting Caitlin. Her enthusiasm was simply infectious. As we’ve formed our bond, Caitlin’s enthusiasm is so often what I look forward to most each week. Whether we’re poring over our favorite works or sharing personal updates from our different lives, there’s a common quest for meaning, purpose, and individuality that we share. Caitlin is steadfast in the belief that her generation is unencumbered by societal pressures for women. (She may not realize how much that inspires this thirtysomething woman!) With the strength of character that she possesses, Caitlin will flourish—in her writing and in life.

Caitlin is a mentee with a love for poetry, arts and crafts, and puns. She can often be found geeking out about science with her friends, writing spontaneous songs, or reading by a window. She spent last summer studying slam poetry with Urban Word, and she's soon going to return as a counselor at her book club camp. Above all, she's immensely grateful for the Girls Write Now community.
