The Writer’s Secret
The Writer’s Secret is a podcast we assembled where two professional writers discussed writing advice they have for aspiring writers.
Process
The process was definitely challenging because Ally and I have never made a podcast before. Originally, when we were coming up with the multi-media piece, we were going to do a podcast (as it appealed to us most through the April workshops we attended) where we interviewed past workshop leaders. However, due to scheduling, we weren’t able to reach any of those interviewees. However, we were lucky enough to reach out to the Girls Write Now Community and find two very willing writers that would help us with our podcast. We thought that the best thing to do for a podcast was discuss the process of writing, starting a writing career, and advice for aspiring writers for mentees to listen to. This way it would help guide them through the process of becoming a writer. Through a very long process of interviewing, recording, editing, piecing together our work, and finalizing our podcast we were able to create, “The Writer’s Secret” and we couldn’t be more proud.

November 9, 2004 marks the day the girl was born. She cradled the newborn baby girl in her arms. A daughter, a daughter she yearned to have. “Her name will be Lyric,” she uttered, “for her heart sounds like music to my ears.” She had a son two years later and they lived in a nice apartment located in Bay Ridge. Lyric was smart, not the smartest in her class, but enough to impress her teachers. She loved to read—from picture books to one word books to novels to writing her own stories. Writing and reading became her life.

Ally Betker is a writer, editor, and creative director living in Brooklyn, New York. She is currently senior creative director of copy & content at the global travel brand Away. She joined Away in 2016 to launch Here Magazine, which ran from 2017 to 2020 and received an American Society of Magazine Editors National Magazine Award nomination as well as awards from the Society of Publication Designers. Prior to joining Away, she worked in media at top publications including Vogue, W Magazine, Women's Wear Daily, and New York Magazine's The Cut, where her writing is featured.
