Explore Belonging Through Magical Realism with Alexandra Méndez

Alexandra V. Méndez will discuss the question of belonging as a driving force in the story told in her debut middle grade novel, What The Jaguar Told Her. The author will talk about how her own background informed the story about a Mexican-American girl named Jade and how she comes to terms with her identity with help from an elderly storyteller who is also a jaguar. Participants will write about their own experiences with belonging and practice writing fiction that explores this theme.

Building Conflict Competence: Relating Well Through Difficult Conversations

In this session, participants will learn about and examine their own conflict styles. We will explore what happens to our brains and bodies while we are in conflict as a way to prepare to work through difficult conversations and relational challenges as they come up. The workshop invites participants to reflect on the content and share from their own experiences as a way to deepen and integrate the teachings. Lessons learned from this session can be applied to our mentoring relationships.

Photopoetry: A Synthesis of Photography and Poetry

Online | Open to all mentees, all mentors, woman-identifying and trans* and gender-expansive members of the public

In this workshop, we will learn about composition and angles in photography, delve into similarities and differences between poems and photographs, and explore how photopoetry unites poets and photographers. We will investigate how good photopoems add depth and context to both the photo and the poem while remaining open to interpretation—extending an invitation to imaginative engagement. Applying the lessons learned, participants will use their smartphones, computers, and imagination to create a photograph in response to a poem—and in so doing, create a photopoem of their own!

Join Stacey Fayant as she takes us on a journey through the history and current revitalization of indigenous tattooing, cultural appropriation vs. cultural sharing, and important health and safety concepts related to tattooing. Participants will be introduced to the drawing app Sketchbook and will create their own tattoo design– telling a personal story or history represented by plants or flowers of their choice.
