Join Girls Write Now and Hannah Olabosibe Eko for an intimate exploration of the power of words with Honey Is the Knife and The Emo Love Letter. During the Friday Night Salon experience, we will dive into the art of writing love letters to or from our emotions---embracing the full spectrum of our inner experience. Salon guests will learn surprising histories of our emotions, meet their feelings where they are, and use the love letter as a tool to navigate pain, pleasure, and everything in between.
Join us at the Girls Write Now Headquarters for our Open Mic Series! Performers are invited to share their work (poems, songs, stories, and more!) on the mic for an audience as we gather to celebrate creativity and build community.
Please join us on Monday, November 11, 2024 for our Youth Be Heard Town Hall discussion. Our theme is 'Self-Care to Community-Care: WE Got US!', and we will be facilitating a dialogue with a local NYC Council Member, as well as other young people. This event promises to be a powerful and insightful dialogue between young people and those in power, about working together to foster an environment where community-care is a shared responsibility.
This is a space for mentors to meet up and talk about their GWN experience, the highlights and challenges. This studio functions like a support group and a think tank, in which we exchange ideas on engaging our mentee, as well as discussing solutions for issues and sharing resources.
In this community studio, we’ll talk about all things voice: the elusive monster of narrative fiction. We’ll do exercises to figure out how our narrators speak and how to make each character that appears in our stories each have a distinct style, personality, vocal quirks, and -isms.
In this Intersectional Voices in Editorial - Print Studio (IV Edit - Print), we will explore the publishing process from all angles, including editing, promotion, and bringing more voices to the page. This studio also provides insight into the making of Girls Write Now’s annual anthology, and in the spring cycle, members of the Print Anthology Committee will work on editing the book
We'll be exploring various styles of and topics in journalism, including profile writing, personal essays, cultural criticism, and more. Community studio participants will be able to learn different techniques, try out different styles, and discover how there's a wide range of ways to be a journalist or incorporate journalism into your writing life.
Get excited for our first meeting this cycle where we’ll go Beyond the Binary, Again to see Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging far beyond the narrow confines.
Writing That Changes the World shows how the written word can be used in service of real life social issues. In this studio, we will read mentor texts, learn various styles of journalistic writing, consider how other media can be used in advocacy work, and even start our own pieces of advocacy journalism. Bring your creativity, enthusiasm, and energy to the table!
