In this studio, we will explore our deepest curiosities and how we can transform those into the dramatic questions that creates conflict in a story. We will also take a look at the relationship our characters’ emotions, wants, and needs has to the conflict and drama of our story.

In this lesson, participants will learn what it takes to fortify a passive hot-take into an active argument via op-eds and argumentative essays.
This fall, Jocelyn Bioh’s School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play opens on Broadway with Manhattan Theatre Club—her second play there, after Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, which earned five Tony nominations. At this Girls Write Now Salon, she tells you how a dancer and actor became a playwright. Then she hands you a prompt and a clock. The challenge: write a 10-minute play in 10 minutes.
Magic systems are an integral part of fantasy stories; from shapeshifting dragons to governments that position armies of great power to manipulate with the mind. Power and magic can take many forms and through this workshop, participants will learn to develop systems unique to their stories.
In this session, participants will learn how to sustain and grow their creative network. Using the University of Chapel Hill’s The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship (a full-ride creative writing scholarship), participants will brainstorm a list of teachers, mentors, supervisors, and more who can speak about their creativity and ambition. Participants will also learn the art of the cold email to connect with writers and artists not in their network.
