Participants will read Alexis Pauline Gumb’s short essay “Seagram Consciousness” to build our understanding of the conventions and impact of eco-writing as a genre. Using maps that explore what Lenapehoking/NYC looked like before colonialism and urban development, as well as NYC’s street tree map, we will create our own piece of eco-writing inspired by a tree we choose to befriend and learn more about. |

In almost all forms of writing, including memoir, creative nonfiction, short fiction and poetry, stories carry more authenticity when you write from your own knowledge base. In this studio, you will probe your life experiences and consider ways to turn them into engaging stories and poems.

In this month’s studio, we’re going to concentrate on editing techniques aimed towards creating consistent, interesting characters. We’ll discuss methods that allow characters’ thoughts and feelings to sing through our prose.

I.V. Edit Print Committee focuses on traditional print media at Girls Write Now. This committee is dedicated to producing the yearly anthology that showcases the written work of Girls Write Now mentees. The goal is to provide a tangible platform for storytelling, allowing community members to see their work in print and share it with a wider audience. Participants in this group also learn all the steps of the publishing process, including concept development, manuscript preparation, design, printing, and distribution.

For this first studio session, we will explore zine making, taking note of the resources and tools that go into such. By the end of the session, expect to come out with ideas and even the foundation for a pitch you can use to start your own zine. |

In this IV Teach Committee session, participants will explore how to give feedback that is supportive, actionable, and growth-oriented. Through reflection, discussion, and small-group collaboration, committee members will examine common challenges in providing feedback and develop practical strategies for celebrating strengths, offering constructive guidance, asking reflective questions, and recognizing potential biases. Together, we will create a community feedback cheat sheet—a shared resource of language, frameworks, and best practices that can be used across Girls Write Now programs to support more inclusive, encouraging, and impactful learning experiences. 
Enjoy two easy and fun writing springs based on provided word prompts. By this session’s end, you’ll have two pieces to submit to contests and publications. |

Are you interested in supporting with digital story publications? Whether you’re WordPress savvy, a skilled graphic designer, or looking to support the Girls Write Now team publish hundreds of mentees original works, we invite you to join us as we dive into editorial tasks, outreach, and the publication of Girls Write Now Stories.

Join us for this workshop series as we talk through how our government is designed, how it functions at its best, ad why it has always been considered an experiment. You’ll leave with an understanding of how you can make an impact in your community and beyond, whether it’s running for office, helping candidates understand your perspective and recommendations, or launching a campaign to use storytelling to change the hearts and minds of others. |

In this Salon, Wen-yi Lee, author of urban historical fantasy, When They Burned the Butterfly, will guide you in finding magic and mythology in the city and the streets around you. How do we connect with the fantastical in our everyday lives? How do cities transform when we think of them as living characters? And how do we imagine different versions of the world around us?

In this session, participants will learn the difference between a scholarship and fellowship and become introduced to databases and resources to find opportunities. Using the community studio lead’s Laidlaw Scholarship as a case study, participants will begin freewritng a vision of their long-term goals. |
