Begin at the Beginning
By Margareta Stern
I decided to focus on bringing awareness to mental health, which is a topic that means a lot to me. I want to bring voice to those who have felt silenced. My work is titled “Begin at the Beginning” because sometimes that is what we have to do. It was also the title of a favorite childhood book of mine.
Process
Mental health has always been very important to me as somebody who has struggled with it and has seen others struggle. I decided to create a short film using iMovie. It was challenging to schedule interviews and organize my time, but I was surprised that the process was a lot of fun. When I finished the project, I felt relieved and proud of the work that I had created, and I can’t wait to present something that means so much to me.
Meet the Pair
MENTEE MARGARETA STERN & MENTOR JEN STRAUS
Margareta’s Anecdote: My mentor and I have a relationship where I can tell them anything and have deep intellectual conversations with them. My mentor encourages me to express my ideas, thoughts, and feelings. My mentor and I both feel very strongly about women’s rights and we both love going to cafés. I’m glad I got the opportunity to work with them and they have inspired me to never stop writing.
Jen’s Anecdote: Getting to know Margareta over the last year has been an absolute joy. I wondered what to expect with a new mentee, but we quickly developed a rich and meaningful rapport. It is a privilege to have watched Margareta grow as a writer, and to share in the many exciting milestones as she gets ready to graduate. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year holds for her and our time at Girls Write Now!
