Changed Lives
By Chenicia Cummings
My podcast is about immigration and how it affects families. This episode sheds light on the difficult lives immigrants lead. My life as an immigrant inspired me to share this.
This represents my best work in the program because this is a topic that I can relate to. I don’t know what it’s like to be separated from one’s family, but I can imagine how challenging it would be.
Process
The idea for this piece came from a workshop that I attended. I wasn’t sure what route to take for my multimedia piece, and after learning about podcasts, I decided to create one using the Anchor app.
While tackling this project, I learned how to talk slowly. I was surprised to hear how fast I talk. I felt relieved after recording the podcast.
Meet the Pair
MENTEE CHENICIA CUMMINGS & MENTOR JENNIFER FORD
Chenicia’s Anecdote: This was me and my mentor’s first year in the program. Working with my mentor has been great. Despite our busy schedules, we made completing this project work. Jennifer has given me the tools to improve my writing. I’m happy that I had the chance to be her mentee this year.
Jennifer’s Anecdote: I enjoyed working with Chenicia. She loves reading romance novels, so I was a bit surprised and excited to see that she chose to write a memoir on topics that aren’t so romantic: death and teenage pregnancy. Chenicia challenged herself this year by exploring different genres and multimedia, and I’m glad that I could be here to support her throughout the journey.
