Flavor
By Domenia Loja
This piece is about the details in food, specifically cake, and all it has to offer—because each one is a reflection of one’s inner self.
It’s the charm
That goes with each slice
It’s the aesthetic
With the colors of pastel rainbow
Shown gently
In your shape and form
It’s a curved circle cut into triangles
Yet with one bite
The pungent flavor
And coffee aside
Gave a whole new lemony sensation
The dark cocoa flavor
With a hint of caramel
Is an explosion of sweet and bitter
The rich and smooth flavor
Made of the tangy cream cheese
Makes it my personal canvas for strawberries
There are not enough flavors that can fill the café’s aroma
Process
YouTube videos were my inspiration, specifically café vlogs. It’s the soft music and the machine sounds that make it intriguing for me to keep watching. I’ve always been a fan of desserts and cakes like anyone else but this got me thinking about how the food we make reflects ourselves. So for the poem, I didn’t want to make it all about the simple taste of vanilla but different flavors that can represent many people.
