Bande Dessinée
A collage of paint and vibrant colors that represent the old comic art style.
Process
I did this in an artist workshop on my own time. I was inspired by old comics that used bright and vivid (generally primary) colors. I used similar colors in my background and character’s hair. Her face is patterned with red dots similar to how backgrounds looked in the comics. I used a dotting tool to creating the skin texture, as well as scissors and glue for everything else. I sketched the character out before overlaying with rigid construction paper. My art teacher helped me along the way, but I did the majority of the work myself. I learned a lot about how different types of artistic media work. Rigid paper is stiff, but cutting it in certain ways can make the job much easier. Throughout the process I could feel myself improving, especially since collage is not my main medium. I felt compelled to make this my piece because of the beautiful story it tells of the past comics, which were a big part of many lives.
