Beyond the Scenes
By Chelsea Lin
The Korean pop group BTS is known for having a devoted fanbase, but very few people are interested in the important messages found in their versatile and lyrically profound music. In my podcast, we will listen to BTS’s refreshing, eclectic, and well-produced bops one at a time and explore the layers of meaning behind the lyrics.
Process
I’ve always been fascinated by podcasts and wanted to try making one. This multimedia piece gave me a chance to explore the creation of a podcast: the spark of an idea, the writing of the script, the search for sound effects, and the editing process. I listened to many other podcasts for inspiration and, with KK’s help, wrote my script after weeks of editing. Although I didn’t have access to a perfect mic, I had fun recording in my closet and found a lot of awesome music in the process.
Meet the Pair
MENTEE CHELSEA LIN & MENTOR KK APPLE
Chelsea’s Anecdote: The first time KK and I met, we unraveled our thoughts about culture, music, and food, and were excited to find so much in common. Our conversations provided me with confidence and an outlet to express my opinions freely. Without KK, a lot of my ideas wouldn’t grow to what they are today. Through working with her, I came to understand the significance of mentorship. KK’s patience, humor, and open-mindedness taught me how to be confident with my voice and I feel so lucky to have had the chance to work with her.
KK’s Anecdote: Getting to know Chelsea has been such a joy this year. She makes me laugh every week as she shares the latest from school or her thoughts on the world around her. When she sits down to write, she’s incredibly honest and brings a thoughtful curiosity to her work. Being her mentor has been a lesson in constantly being impressed. Chelsea is so ambitious and her academic drive inspires me. And, of course, I feel lucky to be schooled in all the best parts of BTS.
